History
[Birth Home of Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan] The Archdiocese of Daegu shrine guide describes this place as the place where Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan spent his childhood until entering the minor seminary after attending Gunwi Elementary School. The Cardinal’s family was a yangban family from Yeonsan in Nonsan County, South Chungcheong Province, a family of martyrs that had accepted the faith since the early days of the spread of Catholicism, and it is said that his grandfather John Kim was arrested in Yeonsan during the Byeongin Persecution and martyred in prison in Seoul, and that his grandmother Kang Mal-son endured hardship with her young children after her husband’s martyrdom while caring for fellow believers.
[Parents and Move] The same guide notes that his father Kim Yeong-seok helped Father Robert, who was in charge of ministry in Gyeongsang-do, and that his mother Seo Jung-ha was a descendant of the Dalseong Seo clan, a well-known believing family in Daegu. Through Father Robert’s matchmaking, Joseph Kim Yeong-seok and Martina Seo Jung-ha married and moved here in April 1922. The Cardinal was born as the youngest among 5 sons and 3 daughters, and in the year he turned 8, after his father died of dropsy, his widowed mother supported the family by peddling earthenware and fabrics.
[Park Creation Process] According to the chronology on the park’s official website, the basic concept and feasibility study service began in 2010, implementation-plan approval was received in 2014, construction began in May 2015 and was completed in December 2017, followed by an opening commemorative event in March 2018. The project period was 6 years from 2012 to 2017, and the total project cost was 121 hundred million won (national 61 hundred million, provincial 18 hundred million, county 42 hundred million). Separately, it is said that provincial 2 hundred million won went to restoring the birth home, county 9 hundred million won to purchasing the site, and Archdiocese of Daegu 13 hundred million won to contents.
