About this place
Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan Love and Sharing Park is a pilgrimage site that the Archdiocese of Daegu lists among its sacred and historic places together with the childhood home of Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan. The park was created around the house where the cardinal lived with his family in childhood, allowing visitors to reflect on his life and the spirit of love and sharing associated with his legacy.
The park includes the restored old house, a memorial hall, the Stations of the Cross, a Peace Forest, and commemorative spaces. Visitors can look beyond the cardinal's personal biography and consider the meaning of his life and faith. Because the archdiocese also includes the site in its pilgrimage listings, it has a dual character as a local memorial park and a place of Catholic religious memory.
History & origins
The park began with the childhood home of Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan in Yongdae-ri, Gunwi-eup, and the memories associated with its surroundings. The house was restored in the form of a traditional thatched home, and the surrounding area was arranged with the site of a pottery kiln and commemorative spaces so that visitors could learn about his family life and formative years.
Gunwi County developed the area around the home as a memorial and pilgrimage site, and Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan Love and Sharing Park opened on March 27, 2018. At the time of opening, the roughly 30,000-square-meter site included the old house, a memorial exhibition hall, a memorial garden, the Stations of the Cross, a Peace Forest, and a lawn plaza.
The site later became both a commemorative tourist attraction in Gunwi and a pilgrimage destination introduced by the Archdiocese of Daegu. Centered on the home and memorial hall, the park connects the cardinal's life with local memory and continues to offer visitors a place to reflect on the meaning of his life and faith.
