About this place

Jeongbalsan Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 419 Ilsan-ro in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang. It was established on September 7, 2000, after separating from Juyeop-dong Parish, and its patronal celebration is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The parish serves Catholics in Jeongbalsan-dong and the central Ilsan New Town area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Formed during the growth of the new city, it developed a family- and generation-based parish community and later contributed to further parish development in the area, including the separation of Hugok.

History & origins

Preparation for Jeongbalsan Parish began before the parish itself was canonically established. A groundbreaking Mass was celebrated on April 11, 1999, and construction began. The parish was established on September 7, 2000, with the arrival of its first pastor, and the new church was completed and occupied with a Mass on October 28.

In July 2001 part of the community separated to form Hugok Parish. When the Diocese of Uijeongbu was created from the Archdiocese of Seoul in 2004, Jeongbalsan became part of the new diocese. Its early history is marked by the transition from a pre-parish church-building project to an established new-town parish.
