About this place

Galma-dong Catholic Church is the church of Galma-dong Parish in the Western Daejeon District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists the Annunciation of the Lord as its patronal feast. It is the parish center where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and take part in community life, providing a stable liturgical and pastoral home for Catholic life in the area.

Today Galma-dong Parish is also significant for giving concrete expression to the Church’s call to ecological conversion and care for our common home. Through solar power, energy-saving measures, ecological activities, and cooperation with the local community, it has become one of the leading parishes in the Diocese of Daejeon’s carbon-neutral pastoral effort. This work extends the meaning of the church beyond a place of worship to a faith community that accepts responsibility for its neighborhood and for creation.

History & origins

Galma-dong Parish was established on 13 August 1991. As residential development and the Catholic population of western Daejeon expanded, a separate parish community was created, and it gradually established an independent base for liturgical and pastoral life centered on Catholics living in the Galma-dong area.

A notable development in the more recent history of the parish has been its ecological ministry. Galma-dong Catholic Church installed more than 94 kW of solar generating capacity and pursued both energy self-sufficiency and reductions in carbon emissions. Its efforts have included not only changes to facilities but also education, practical community action, and cooperation on local environmental concerns.

On 27 May 2024, these efforts led Galma-dong Catholic Church to become the first parish in the Diocese of Daejeon to receive the diocese’s SOL carbon-neutral certification. The parish’s history has thus developed from the formation of a local Catholic community toward a concrete communal response to the Church’s call to safeguard creation.
