Overview

Saint Kim Dae-geon Andrew Church is a church of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Hwanggeum-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu Metropolitan City. It was established on October 26, 1987 as the number of faithful at Beomeo Church, Hwanggeum Church, and Manchon Church grew. Its patron is Saint Andrew Kim Dae-geon, and its first pastor was Father Lee Jeong-chu (Paul).

History

[Establishment and name] The Daegu History and Culture Encyclopedia states that, as the number of faithful at Beomeo Church, Hwanggeum Church, and Manchon Church increased, the diocese established Saint Kim Dae-geon Parish on October 26, 1987 at 133 Hwanggeum-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu Metropolitan City. Although it is customary to name a church after the neighborhood, Hwanggeum-dong already had Hwanggeum Church, established in 1983, so it was named ‘Saint Kim Dae-geon Church.’ The establishment date October 26, 1987 also appears in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory and in the Archdiocese of Daegu parish information.

[Temporary church and completion of the church building] According to the Daegu History and Culture Encyclopedia, the first Mass was celebrated in a tent erected on the planned parish site on November 17, 1987, and the temporary church was completed on December 6, 1987. The groundbreaking ceremony for church construction was held on September 9, 1989, and the church was completed and the dedication ceremony was held on April 7, 1991.

[Spin-off] The Daegu History and Culture Encyclopedia records that it spun off Saint Paul Jeong Ha-sang Church on August 25, 2005.

[Activities and jurisdiction] The Daegu History and Culture Encyclopedia states that it conducts Bible study and Gospel sharing through the small-community movement and holds and operates the Social Welfare Association, the Life Love scholarship presentation, reading concerts, filial pilgrimages for the elderly, filial feasts for the elderly, and fusion Korean traditional music performances at the book cafe. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists its jurisdiction as all of Beomeo 4-dong and part of Hwanggeum 1-dong, and its sisters as the Sisters of Christian Education.

[Significance] The Daegu History and Culture Encyclopedia evaluates Saint Kim Dae-geon Church as a Catholic Church needed to study the process of Catholic propagation in the Hwanggeum-dong area of Suseong-gu after the 1980s and the status and role of Catholicism in the local community.
