About this place
Yun Ji-heon Catholic Church is the church and pastoral center of a parish in District 5 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju, serving Miryong-dong, Singwan-dong, and part of Okgu-eup in Gunsan. The current diocesan directory names Blessed Francis Yun Ji-heon as the parish patron. It serves the ordinary pastoral needs of local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis, while also making the memory of a beatified martyr a clear part of the parish's identity.
The church is one of the memorial churches designated by the Diocese of Jeonju to preserve the memory of the first martyrs associated with the Sinhae Persecution. The former Miryong-dong Parish adopted the name Yun Ji-heon as it prepared and dedicated a new church, turning the new sacred space into a sign of the community's intention to remember and inherit the martyr's faith. Visitors can therefore understand the site both as a territorial parish in southwestern Gunsan and as a memorial church that carries the Diocese of Jeonju's tradition of martyr remembrance into contemporary worship and community life.
History & origins
Yun Ji-heon Parish began as Miryong-dong Parish. According to the Diocese of Jeonju, it was established in 2003 by dividing territory from Nawoondong and Okbong parishes. As the parish developed in the Miryong-dong area of Gunsan, it began preparing for a new church, and in 2019 it purchased the site on which the present complex would be built.
In December 2021, the Diocese of Jeonju designated Miryong-dong as one of the memorial churches honoring the first martyrs of the Sinhae Persecution. Parishioners continued prayer and fundraising for the construction project, and a groundbreaking blessing was held in October 2022. After about one year and eight months of construction, a new complex consisting of the church and an education building was completed.
On October 19, 2024, Bishop John Kim Son-tae presided over the dedication of the new church, formally marking the parish's new beginning under the name Yun Ji-heon Catholic Church. The development from the establishment of Miryong-dong Parish in 2003 to the dedication of Yun Ji-heon Church in 2024 was therefore more than a response to local growth: it was a process in which the Diocese of Jeonju's commitment to honoring the martyrs became embodied in the parish's name, architecture, and faith life.
