About this place

Samga-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Cheoin District in the Diocese of Suwon, serving the Catholic community in and around Samga-dong in Cheoin-gu, Yongin. The Catholic Directory of Korea lists the Korean martyr Saint Ignatius Kim Je-jun as the parish patron, giving the parish an identity closely connected with the local tradition of martyr faith.

Cheoin-gu in Yongin contains places such as the Euni Shrine and Golbaemaesil, where the memory of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon and the early Catholic Church in Korea remains especially strong. Within this setting, Samga-dong Parish sustains ordinary parish life through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities, while standing in a region where everyday pastoral life meets the memory of the martyrs.

Visitors can understand Samga-dong Catholic Church not as a facility intended only for pilgrimage, but as a territorial parish responsible for the continuing faith life of local Catholics. At the same time, its patronage of Saint Ignatius Kim Je-jun and its participation with other Cheoin District parishes in events honoring the martyrs show one way in which the community carries Yongin’s Catholic history and martyr tradition into present parish life.

History & origins

Samga-dong Parish was established as a new parish of the Diocese of Suwon on September 26, 2006. An academic survey of Catholic heritage published by Yongin City also places Samga-dong Parish in the local parish genealogy as a Cheoin District parish formed in 2006. This reflects the creation of an independent pastoral community for Catholics around Samga-dong as Yongin’s population and residential areas expanded and the existing parish network became more differentiated. Its appearance as a distinct parish in the genealogy of Yongin’s Catholic communities shows that the parish network was continuing to expand on top of the region’s older Catholic foundations in response to new residential areas and pastoral needs.

The parish chose the Korean martyr Saint Ignatius Kim Je-jun as its patron. Saint Ignatius was the father of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon and is deeply connected with the history of martyrdom in the Catholic Church in Korea. The choice therefore also resonates with the historical setting of Cheoin, where places such as Euni and Golbaemaesil preserve strong memories of the early Korean Catholic community.

After its establishment, the Samga-dong community participated with other parishes of the Cheoin District in activities commemorating the region’s heritage of faith. In 2016, Samga-dong was among the parishes taking part in the 13th Cheoin District Martyrs’ Veneration Gathering, an event centered on Euni Shrine that remembered the martyrs and renewed the faith of local Catholics. This is an example of how the meaning of the parish patron has not remained merely a name, but has been connected with the region’s living memory of faith through nearby shrines and district-wide events.

Publicly available sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct every stage of church construction or relocation. Nevertheless, the parish’s establishment in 2006 and its later participation in district-wide activities show a community created in response to new pastoral needs and subsequently linked with the wider martyr tradition of the Cheoin area.
