About this place

Yonghyeon 5-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Michuhol District of the Diocese of Incheon and serves as a center for the liturgy, sacraments, catechesis, and community life of Catholics in the Yonghyeon area. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists it as a parish of the diocese and records its patronal title as the “Commemoration of the Washing of the Feet.” The choice of an event from the life of Jesus, rather than the name of a saint, is one of the distinctive features through which this parish can be understood.

Within Catholic liturgy, the washing of the feet recalls Christ's love and service. The parish's patronal title therefore provides a spiritual background that invites the community, centered on Mass and sacramental life, to remember a life of mutual service as well. The parish is now an established Catholic community within the urban area of southern Michuhol, where local faithful gather regularly for parish life.

History & origins

Yonghyeon 5-dong Parish was established on February 23, 1984, after being separated from Sungui-dong Parish. According to a Catholic Times report on the dedication of its church, the newly independent community continued its life of faith for a number of years in a temporary church structure. Securing a permanent church became one of the major tasks the parish community had to undertake after its establishment.

Construction of the new church formally began with a groundbreaking ceremony on October 14, 1989. After approximately two years and one month of work, a church building with one basement level and three above-ground floors was completed, together with a separate rectory facility. The church included a main worship space, a smaller chapel, catechetical rooms, confessionals, and a choir loft, providing the spaces needed for parish life.

On November 23, 1991, Bishop William J. McNaughton of Incheon presided over the dedication of the new church. The report also records that parishioners had worked for years to raise funds for construction. The completion and dedication marked a major transition in which the community moved from temporary facilities after its separation to a permanent church and established a stable physical foundation for parish life.
