Yesan Sanseongri Catholic Church is the church of Yesan Sanseongri Parish in the Hongseong District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records Saint Michael the Archangel as its patron. Centered on Sanseong-ri in Yesan-eup, it is a parish where local Catholics gather for the liturgy, sacraments, and communal life.
An important background for understanding the church is that the community was formed by separating from Yesan Parish as the longstanding Catholic presence in the Yesan area expanded. Today it continues as an independent parish, and together with Yesan Catholic Church it reflects the way the Catholic community in the region grew and its pastoral territory was divided over time.
History & origins
Yesan Sanseongri Parish was established as the Catholic population in the Yesan area grew and the pastoral territory of the existing Yesan Parish was divided. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records its establishment date as August 17, 1988, and the GoodNews history of Yesan Parish likewise states that the new parish was separated and established from Yesan Parish on that date. Saint Michael the Archangel was chosen as its patron.
At the time of separation, parts of Jugyo-ri in Yesan-eup, Oga-myeon, and parts of Daeheung-myeon were transferred to the new parish. In connection with this reorganization, the former Yesan Parish used the name “Yesan Ori-dong Parish” for a time. This shows that the creation of Sanseongri Parish was not merely the construction of another church building but a reorganization of the pastoral map of the Yesan area.
Yesan Sanseongri subsequently became established as an independent parish within the Hongseong District of the Diocese of Daejeon. The current directory still records the same parish name and Saint Michael the Archangel as its patron, confirming continuity between the 1988 division and the parish’s present identity.
