About this place
Yeoja-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Masan in the third pastoral area of the Changwon district, serving the liturgical and faith life of Catholics in and around Yeoja-dong, Jinhae-gu, Changwon. The Catholic Church directory in Korea lists St. Francis of Assisi as the parish patron and records that the Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help serve the parish. The congregation’s Masan community is located on the same site, giving the parish a clear character of priests, religious sisters, and lay faithful serving the local community together.
A diocesan profile of Yeoja-dong highlights lay participation and service to neighbors as important features of the community. Youth volunteer activities, charitable work by parish associations, and a practice in which parishioners themselves contribute writings to the parish bulletin have helped build a shared memory through ordinary participation. Visitors can therefore understand the place not simply as a church building, but as a local Catholic parish that seeks to live the Gospel spirit of St. Francis of Assisi through Mass, small-community life, sharing, and service.
History & origins
According to the history of the Diocese of Masan and the Catholic Church directory in Korea, Yeoja-dong Parish was established on January 5, 1979. It belonged to a period when a number of new parishes were being formed as the Diocese of Masan responded to urbanization and the growth of the Catholic population in the Changwon and Jinhae areas. Yeoja-dong became an independent parish community with St. Francis of Assisi as its patron. In the same year as the parish’s foundation, a conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was organized and began charitable work for neighbors in need.
The parish facilities were later renewed in response to the community’s growth and needs. A diocesan parish profile records that reconstruction of the church was undertaken in 2013 and completed through the contributions and participation of parishioners. The project is remembered not merely as the renovation of a building, but as an experience in which the members of the parish worked together to prepare their shared sacred space.
In 2019 the parish marked the fortieth anniversary of its foundation with community celebrations. The diocesan account notes that Yeoja-dong had produced a number of priests and religious and was working to organize and preserve its own history. The changes since its foundation—renewal of the church, the development of devotional and charitable associations, and the fruit of vocations—have accumulated as part of the faith memory of the local Catholic community.
