About this place

Yeongsan Catholic Church is a parish in the North Wonju District of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Gwanggyeok-ri, Yeongsan-ri, Gosan-ri, Oksan-ri, and Daedeok-ri in Hojeo-myeon, Wonju. The Catholic Church in Korea directory lists Saint Joseph as its patron and records one mission station under the parish. It is the local center where Catholics dispersed among several villages of Hojeo-myeon gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and fellowship.

Records show that a Catholic community under the name Yeongsan existed as a mission station long before the present parish was established. Today’s Yeongsan Parish is therefore best understood not as an entirely new institution, but as the development of a mission-station tradition that continued under several parishes in the Hojeo area before becoming an independent parish community. This continuity invites visitors to see not only the church building but also the Catholic life that developed together with the surrounding rural villages.

History & origins

The mission-station history of the Yeongsan community can be traced at least to 1959. The history of Hakseong-dong Parish in the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that Yeongsan Mission Station was transferred from Hoengseong Parish to Hakseong-dong Parish in September 1959. As parish boundaries in Wonju and the Hojeo area were later reorganized, Yeongsan Mission Station was transferred in September 1981 to the newly established Taejang-dong Parish.

The Catholic Church in Korea directory gives February 27, 2006, as the establishment date of the present Yeongsan Parish. From this point the Yeongsan community can be understood as having developed from the earlier mission-station stage into a more independent pastoral unit. Later records, however, identify its status at that time as a quasi-parish, so the 2006 establishment record should be distinguished from the date of elevation to a full parish.

On September 3, 2010, the Diocese of Wonju elevated Yeongsan Quasi-Parish to a full parish. The Catholic Times reported that the new parish was assigned to Wonju District 2 and served the Gosan-ri and Gwanggyeok-ri areas of Hojeo-myeon. The sequence from the mission-station transfers of the 1950s and 1980s, through the quasi-parish stage of the 2000s, to full parish status in 2010 shows how the Catholic community of Hojeo-myeon gradually developed into an independent parish.
