월송 공소 is a mission station in the Seowonju pastoral district of the Diocese of Wonju under the care of Seowonju Parish. It is the local community through which Catholics in Wolsong-ri, Jijeong-myeon, remain connected with the parish. The Catholic Church directory in Korea registers Wolsong as a mission station of the Diocese of Wonju and identifies Seowonju as its current mother parish. Its basic role is to give Catholics living at some distance from the parish church a place to gather for prayer, the celebration of Mass, and community life.
Wolsong is one of the mission communities that have long brought parish pastoral care closer to rural areas west of Wonju. Although its mother parish changed as diocesan pastoral boundaries were reorganized, the mission community itself continued. Visitors today should understand 월송 공소 not as an independent parish but as a small community that sustains the religious life of local Catholics within the pastoral network of Seowonju Parish.
History & origins
The Catholic Church directory in Korea records 1956 as the founding year of 월송 공소. When Hakseong-dong Parish was established the following year, Wolsong was included among its initial mission stations together with Munmak and Buron, showing that the Wolsong community had already become one of the earlier mission communities in the western Wonju area.
According to the history of Hakseong-dong Parish, a 21-pyeong mission chapel was provided at Wolsong and blessed in August 1972. This is an important record of the community obtaining a stable place for liturgy and communal life after its establishment. In February 1977, a reorganization of diocesan pastoral territories transferred Wolsong Mission Station from Hakseong-dong Parish to Munmak Parish.
The Catholic Church directory now lists Seowonju Parish as the mother parish of 월송 공소. Public sources do not establish the exact date when jurisdiction moved from Munmak Parish to Seowonju Parish, but the mission community itself continued through the succession of different parish jurisdictions. The history of Wolsong shows how a mission station could sustain local Catholic life even as pastoral boundaries in the region were reorganized.
