About this place
우천 성당 is a parish in the Hoengseong pastoral district of the Diocese of Wonju, serving as the local Catholic community responsible for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and communal life for Catholics in Ucheon-myeon. The Catholic Church directory in Korea currently registers Ucheon as a parish of the Diocese of Wonju. Its character is also closely connected with surrounding rural mission communities because the local Catholic community itself continued for many years as a mission station before becoming a parish.
Ucheon Parish is not only a liturgical center for its own members but also part of a local pastoral network that includes nearby mission communities. Drawing on the experience accumulated during its long period as a mission station, the community took on a wider pastoral role after becoming a parish. The place is therefore best understood not simply as a recently established church building, but as the center that emerged when a longstanding mission community grew into a parish.
History & origins
The roots of the Ucheon Catholic community go back far earlier than the establishment of the parish, to its years as a mission station. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that Hoengseong Parish established Ucheon Mission Station in 1950. A Catholic Peace Broadcasting report adds that the community had already been maintaining Catholic life from around 1948 while moving through places such as Yangjeok-ri and Dugok-ri. Read together, the two sources indicate that local Catholics began forming a community in several locations in the late 1940s and that in 1950 it acquired a more formal institutional shape as a mission station of Hoengseong Parish.
For many years Ucheon Mission Station did not have a stable church site and moved from place to place. Catholic Peace Broadcasting records that after passing through Yangjeok-ri, Dugok-ri, and other locations, the community finally settled at its present site in Uhang-ri in 1994. The fact that such a small mission community endured for decades despite repeated changes of location shows how Catholics in the Ucheon area maintained their faith and their connection with the parish.
The faithful saved a building fund for more than ten years in hope of parish status and a new church. In 2020, Ucheon Mission Station, then under Hoengseong Parish, was elevated to a parish, changing the scope of the community's responsibility. At the same time Jeonggeum Mission Station came under Ucheon Parish, so Ucheon, once itself a mission station of another parish, became a parish responsible for a neighboring mission community. This was more than a change of title; it expanded Ucheon's responsibility within the local pastoral structure.
After the elevation, the Ucheon community used approximately 350 million won that it had collected for its own new church first to provide a new building for the older and more deteriorated Jeonggeum Mission Station. For a community that had long hoped for a church of its own, choosing to place another mission's need first became an important part of its history. Ucheon's story therefore extends beyond growth from mission station to parish and into a new stage in which the parish shared its resources and helped sustain the Catholic community of the surrounding region.
