About this place
태장1동 성당 is a parish in the Bukwonju district of the Diocese of Wonju, serving an area centered on Taejang 1-dong in Wonju. Its patron is St. Francis of Assisi, and the Catholic Directory of Korea lists it as a parish without dependent mission stations. It is a local urban parish where Catholics in northeastern Wonju gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community activities.
It should be distinguished from 태장동 성당, which shares the Taejang place name but is a separate parish. 태장1동 성당 has its own pastoral territory centered on Taejang 1-dong. Its significance lies in being an urban pastoral unit created so that Catholics could participate in parish life closer to their own neighborhood as residential areas and local communities in Wonju changed and expanded.
History & origins
Before an independent parish was established, the Taejang 1-dong area formed part of the broad territory of Bongsan-dong Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that when Bongsan-dong Parish was erected in 1972, all of Taejang 1-dong was included in its jurisdiction. At that time, one parish served several neighborhoods across northeastern Wonju.
As urban growth and residential patterns changed, a separate parish structure was established for Taejang 1-dong. The current Catholic Directory of Korea records August 20, 2004 as the establishment date of Taejang 1-dong Parish. The area that had once belonged to Bongsan-dong Parish thus became an independent parish community.
The publicly available sources are not sufficient to reconstruct every administrative step immediately preceding the separation or the complete sequence of church construction. The broader development, however, is clear: an area once served within Bongsan-dong Parish became an independent parish in 2004. This can be understood as part of the Diocese of Wonju's gradual adjustment of its parish network to the urban expansion of Wonju.
