Sulmi Mission Station

Sulmi Mission Station belongs to Heungeop Parish in the Diocese of Wonju and is located within Galgeori Sarangchon, a welfare community for people with disabilities in Daean-ri, Heungeop-myeon, Wonju. The Catholic Peace Newspaper describes Sulmi as a place where the faith of Catholic villages that survived persecution in the late Joseon period continues, and reports that residents of Sarangchon and local Catholics today share a life of faith there through liturgy, Bible reading, and other activities.

Sulmi is also a stop on the “Way of Choi Hae-seong John,” the martyrdom-themed section of the Diocese of Wonju’s pilgrimage routes known as “The Lord’s Way.” Sulmi, Daean-ri, and Hurisa mission stations all lie along the route from Seoji Village to Wondong Cathedral. The site is therefore both a small living mission community and a pilgrimage place linking memories of persecution and historic Catholic villages in the Wonju region. Its location inside a welfare community also shows how its religious life is closely connected with a community of care.
