About this place
Ssangyong Mission Station belongs to the Jecheon District of the Diocese of Wonju and is a small Catholic community that has sustained the faith of Catholics in the Ssangyong area of Hanbando-myeon, Yeongwol County. The Catholic Church in Korea directory classifies the site as a mission station rather than a parish and confirms it on Daechugol-gil in Hanbando-myeon. It is best understood not as an independent parish, but as a local center for liturgy and community life under the pastoral care of its responsible parish.
Ssangyong is one of the older mission stations whose existence can be confirmed from the early period of the Diocese of Wonju. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea names Ssangyong among the mission stations established in the 1960s, and histories of neighboring parishes record later changes in its pastoral jurisdiction. These records show that Ssangyong is not merely a recently registered facility, but a Catholic community that has retained its local identity amid changes in pastoral organization in southwestern Yeongwol.
History & origins
The Catholic Church in Korea directory records September 3, 1965, as the establishment date of Ssangyong Mission Station. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea likewise mentions Ssangyong among the mission stations founded during the Diocese of Wonju’s growth in the 1960s. Because the Diocese of Wonju itself had been separated from the Diocese of Chuncheon in March of that year, the beginnings of Ssangyong coincided with the period when the new diocese was organizing a pastoral network across its broad mountainous territory.
Its mother parish later changed as diocesan pastoral boundaries were reorganized. According to the history of Uirim-dong Parish, Ssangyong Mission Station was transferred to Cheongjeon-dong Parish in February 1995 and returned to the jurisdiction of Uirim-dong Parish in October 2001. This reflects changes in pastoral administration rather than the closure and re-establishment of the mission station itself.
This history shows how a Catholic community located far from a parish center could continue around a mission station even as diocesan structures changed. The continued use of the name Ssangyong Mission Station despite changes in the responsible parish illustrates the role of mission stations in preserving continuity in local Catholic life.
