About this place

Socho Catholic Church is a parish of the North Wonju District in the Diocese of Wonju and serves as a local pastoral center for the Catholic community of Socho-myeon in Wonju. The Catholic Church in Korea directory lists Saint Peter as the parish patron and gives its territory as Socho-myeon excluding Jangyang-ri, Uigwan-ri, and Dundun-ri. It has a clear role as a focal point where Catholics dispersed across a broad rural area can sustain their life of faith through Mass and the sacraments.

The present church building has two floors. The first floor contains the church, sacristy, and confessionals, while the second floor includes the choir loft. The Catholic Times also notes a statue of Jesus with outstretched arms in front of the church. Visitors can best understand the site not simply as a building, but as the living place where the parish community of Socho gathers for liturgy, the sacraments, catechesis, and fellowship.

History & origins

The Socho community traces its beginnings to December 1950, when it was a mission station under Hakseong-dong Parish. As pastoral boundaries were reorganized, the Socho mission station was transferred to Bongsan-dong Parish in 1977 and was later served under Taejang-dong Parish. During the Taejang-dong period, facilities for the local community were also improved, including the blessing of a Marian statue at the mission station in 1991 and the repair and blessing of its hall in 1994.

After continuing for decades as a mission station, Socho was elevated to an independent parish on January 15, 2003. Father Peter Kim Chan-jin became its first pastor, giving Catholics in Socho-myeon a distinct parish framework for pastoral care and liturgical life.

In preparation for the twentieth anniversary of parish elevation, construction of a new church was undertaken, and a groundbreaking Mass was celebrated on May 8, 2022. Parishioners raised funds by visiting numerous parishes, and members of the community with construction skills also took part in the work. The completed church was dedicated on November 26, 2023, with Bishop Basil Cho Kyu-man of Wonju presiding. The path from mission station to parish and then to a new church reflects the long process by which the Catholic community of Socho built up its local foundation of faith.
