About this place

Sinbaek-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Jecheon District of the Diocese of Wonju. Its territory centers on Sinbaek-dong and includes Gomyeong-dong, Daeryang-dong, Heukseok-dong, Duhak-dong, Jajak-dong, Gangje-dong, part of Donghyeon-dong in Jecheon, and Eosangcheon-myeon in Danyang County. The Catholic Church in Korea directory lists the Immaculate Heart of Mary as its patron and identifies Eosangcheon as its one mission station. By serving both southeastern Jecheon and part of Danyang County, the parish links urban and rural pastoral areas.

The church complex was built to include the main worship space, parish office, rectory, and convent in one facility, and an elevator was installed to assist parishioners with mobility difficulties. Sinbaek-dong is therefore a living parish space that accommodates not only Mass and the sacraments but also catechesis and community activities. Its relationship with Eosangcheon Mission Station also illustrates how a parish and a mission station work together to serve a broad pastoral territory.

History & origins

Construction of Sinbaek-dong Catholic Church began in April 2002, before the parish was formally established. According to the Catholic Times, the work took about one year and seven months, producing a three-story church complex with one basement level that included the main worship space, parish office, rectory, and convent.

The Diocese of Wonju established Sinbaek-dong Parish on February 12, 2004. At that time Sinbaek-dong, Gomyeong-dong, Daeryang-dong, Heukseok-dong, Duhak-dong, Jajak-dong, and Eosangcheon Mission Station in Eosangcheon-myeon, Danyang County, were placed under the new parish. On the same day, Bishop James Kim Ji-seok presided over the dedication of the new church, so the completion of the building and the launch of the parish community occurred together.

With this establishment, the Diocese of Wonju had thirty-eight parishes at the time. Although parts of the territory have since been adjusted in response to urban development and administrative conditions, Eosangcheon Mission Station remains linked to Sinbaek-dong as its mother parish. The establishment of Sinbaek-dong Parish created an independent pastoral community that brought together Catholics in southeastern Jecheon and the Eosangcheon area of Danyang.
