About this place

Seowonju Catholic Church is the parish church of the Seowonju district of the Diocese of Wonju, located in Jijeong-myeon, Wonju, Gangwon State. The Catholic Church directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea records Saint Roch as the parish patron and identifies the parish as serving Jijeong-myeon and part of Hojeo-myeon. In the western Wonju area, where suburban, rural, and newly developed residential zones meet, the parish is a pastoral center where Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and maintain community life.

The parish has pastoral responsibility for the Ganhyeon and Wolsong mission stations. Both communities were formed before Seowonju Parish itself and are now connected to the parish so that Catholics across a wider territory can continue their life of faith. This structure shows that Seowonju is not merely a church building at one location but the parish center linking several Catholic communities across the Jijeong-myeon area.

For this reason, Seowonju combines the character of a relatively new parish with the role of a central parish that includes older mission communities. The relationship between one parish and two mission stations shows how the diocese links communities of different sizes within a single pastoral structure across a geographically dispersed area.

History & origins

Seowonju Parish was established by the Diocese of Wonju on August 16, 2018. The Catholic Church directory records this foundation date together with Saint Roch as the parish patron, confirming that a new pastoral center for western Wonju was formally organized as a parish in 2018.

Catholic life in the area, however, predates the establishment of the parish. The directory records Ganhyeon Mission Station, now under Seowonju Parish, as having been established in 1953, and Wolsong Mission Station in 1956. These two communities show that Catholics had already maintained local centers of faith in the Jijeong-myeon area decades before the creation of the parish.

The establishment of Seowonju Parish in 2018 should therefore be understood not as the beginning of Catholic faith in the area, but as a reorganization of pastoral life in western Wonju around a new parish center that now includes older mission communities. Public official sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct the chronology of church construction or a dedication ceremony, so the firm historical core currently consists of the parish foundation and its connection with these pre-existing mission stations.
