About this place
Seongnaedong Catholic Church in Samcheok, Gangwon State, is a parish church of the Diocese of Wonju and a National Registered Cultural Heritage site that preserves the character of Catholic church architecture from the 1950s. The Korea Heritage Service notes that the building served as a base for Catholic evangelization in the southern Yeongdong region of Gangwon and has value for showing construction methods and materials used locally after the Korean War. Its distinctive character lies in the coexistence of an active parish community and a modern cultural heritage building.
The church is also closely associated with the memory of its first pastor, Father James Maginn, who was killed during the Korean War. The parish community endured the war and major changes in local society while continuing to serve as a center for Mass, the sacraments, education, and mutual support. Visitors can therefore look beyond the architectural features of the building to the wider history of how a Catholic community was formed in Samcheok, passed through the wounds of war, and continued into the present.
Heritage status does not freeze the parish’s present religious life as if the church were a museum. Seongnaedong is both a modern historic building that must be preserved and an active parish where Catholics still gather, making the coexistence of a historic structure and a living liturgical community especially significant.
History & origins
The modern parish history of Samcheok began in 1946 with the establishment of Samcheok Mission Station under Gangneung Parish. Catholics gathered around local industrial workplaces, including the cement industry, helped form the foundation of the community, and in October 1949 the mission station was elevated to a parish. The first pastor, Father James Maginn of the Missionary Society of St. Columban, was killed by North Korean forces in July 1950 during the Korean War.
After the war, the parish rebuilt its community and facilities. The present church and rectory were constructed in 1957, and the parish moved to the new site and held a dedication on November 5 of that year. The Korea Heritage Service evaluates the building as an example of construction techniques and materials used in postwar Gangwon and also notes its role as a center of evangelization in the southern Yeongdong region.
The parish’s service to the area extended beyond the church itself. St. Joseph Clinic opened in 1961 and provided medical service to local residents. When the Diocese of Wonju was separated from the Diocese of Chuncheon and established in 1965, Samcheok Parish became part of the new diocese. Its name changed to Seongnaeri Parish in 1966 and to Seongnaedong Parish in 1988, giving it the name used today.
The parish’s long history and architectural value eventually received formal heritage recognition. The church building was registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage on December 31, 2004, and has since been preserved under that designation. The history of Seongnaedong therefore brings together evangelization, wartime loss, postwar reconstruction, medical and community service, and diocesan reorganization as part of the modern Catholic history of Samcheok.
