About this place
The Daughters of St. Paul community in Dangu-dong, Wonju, is listed in the Catholic Church directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea as the congregation’s Wonju branch. The Daughters of St. Paul have a distinctive mission of evangelization through the means of social communication and carry out apostolates through publishing, bookstores, missionary outreach, education, Bible programs, and other forms of communication. The Wonju branch should therefore be understood not as a territorial parish church but as a local religious community and a base for the congregation’s communications apostolate.
Official materials of the congregation emphasize that the Gospel is communicated not only through books and media but also through the sisters’ own lives and relationships. The Wonju community has served the local Church within this Pauline spirituality, grounding its apostolate in prayer and common religious life. Visitors should therefore understand the place primarily as a branch community where the Daughters of St. Paul live their consecrated life and mission of the Word rather than as a regular center of parish liturgy.
For this reason, understanding the Wonju branch requires looking less at the size of its building or whether it functions as a public liturgical center and more at how the congregation communicates the Word and builds relationships within the local Church. The branch community itself is one way in which the congregation’s mission takes root in a particular region.
History & origins
The Daughters of St. Paul began in Alba, Italy, on June 15, 1915, through the initiative of Blessed James Alberione. The congregation was founded to use the emerging means of social communication for the proclamation of the Gospel, and it subsequently developed a distinctive apostolate centered on publishing and media.
The first sisters arrived in Korea on December 13, 1960. According to the congregation’s official chronology, they began their apostolate in Korea in 1961 and gradually expanded the work of communicating the Word and Catholic faith through publishing and distribution.
The congregation’s direct connection with the Diocese of Wonju appears in its official chronology under 1991 as its “entry into the Diocese of Wonju.” This marked the establishment of a basis for the Daughters of St. Paul’s communications apostolate to continue within the local Church of Wonju beyond activities centered in Seoul.
The form of the sisters’ ministry has continued to adapt to the needs of the local Church. The official chronology also records that in 2016 a member was assigned to the Diocese of Wonju’s youth pastoral office. The present Wonju branch continues the congregation’s evangelizing mission within this history of collaboration and missionary assignment in the diocese.
