Sangdong Mission Station is a Catholic mission community of the Diocese of Wonju in Sangdong-eup, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon State. The Catholic Church directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea lists it as a mission station in the Taebaek district of the diocese. The community was once an independent parish and now continues its life of faith as a mission station, showing how a local Catholic community endured despite major changes in the surrounding area.
Unlike a parish with a resident priest, a mission station is a local community that continues prayer and liturgical life within the pastoral care of its mother parish. Sangdong likewise serves as a focal point for Catholics in this mountainous area, linking the memory of its former parish period with the life of the smaller community that remains today. It can therefore be understood as a place where local faith has continued even as its institutional scale and status changed.
The significance of Sangdong should not be judged only by the community’s present small scale. The experience of its former parish period and the life of today’s local mission community continue in the same place, offering a perspective on how the Diocese of Wonju has sustained Catholic communities across a broad mountainous region.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Sangdong first existed as a mission station under Yeongwol Parish and was elevated to parish status on October 20, 1958. The Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism records that parts of Sangdong-myeon and Hadong-myeon were separated from Yeongwol Parish and placed under the newly established Sangdong Parish. Catholics in the area thus came to receive pastoral care within an independent parish structure.
When the Diocese of Wonju was separated from the Diocese of Chuncheon and established in 1965, Sangdong Parish continued its history within the new diocesan structure. Located in a mountainous area, the parish was affected over time by changes in the surrounding population and living environment.
In 1993, the Diocese of Wonju determined that changing local circumstances made it difficult for Sangdong to continue functioning as an independent parish and closed the parish. The Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism records that its territory was incorporated into Hwangji Parish and that the Sangdong community subsequently remained as a mission station.
Today’s Sangdong Mission Station therefore preserves a history that moved from mission station to parish and back to mission station. This trajectory shows how diocesan pastoral structures may be adjusted as local conditions change, while also showing that the community of believers continued to maintain a place of faith even after its institutional status was reduced.
