Sabuk Catholic Church

About this place

Sabuk Catholic Church is a parish in the Taebaek district of the Diocese of Wonju, located in Sabuk-eup, Jeongseon County. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Saint John Bosco as its patron and records the parish as serving the present territories of Sabuk-eup and Nam-myeon. Within a community that grew dramatically through coal mining, the parish is the local center responsible for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and Catholic community life.

A Catholic Times feature describes the parish community as having lived through both the growth and decline of the mining town while remaining close to miners, their families, and local residents. Even after the regional economy changed, its role in connecting community life, social concern, and faith remained important. The precise foundation year, however, is presented differently by the current official directory and by the historical wording of that news feature. For that reason, this introduction is limited to the parish's verified present identity and local role, while the date conflict is treated as unresolved in the history section. The directory’s record that the parish currently has two mission stations shows that its pastoral care extends beyond the church in Sabuk-eup to surrounding local communities.
