About this place
평창 성당 is a parish in the Yeongpyeongjeong district of the Diocese of Wonju, with pastoral responsibility for Pyeongchang-eup and Mitan-myeon. Its patron is Our Lady, Queen of the Rosary, and the current Catholic Directory of Korea lists it as a parish without dependent mission stations. Centered in Pyeongchang-eup, it serves as a regional pastoral center where Catholics across a broad mountain area gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
Because Pyeongchang County is mountainous and its settlements are widely dispersed, the parish has a role that goes beyond the function of the church building itself: it connects Catholics living across the region into one community. By serving both Pyeongchang-eup and Mitan-myeon within one pastoral territory, 평창 성당 forms part of the parish network through which the Diocese of Wonju serves the mountain areas of Gangwon.
History & origins
The direct beginning of Pyeongchang Parish lies in a diocesan pastoral reorganization in 1965. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that on October 7, 1965 the center of the existing Daehwa Parish was transferred to Pyeongchang and Pyeongchang Parish was established. The current Catholic Directory of Korea gives the same date, so this starting point is consistent across independent Church sources.
A parish community had already existed in the Daehwa area since 1931, but when Pyeongchang Parish was established in October 1965, Daehwa became a mission station of the new parish. This was not merely a change of name; it represented a transfer of the pastoral center of the area from Daehwa to Pyeongchang-eup. The ministry record of Columban missionary Fr. Brendan Ham, the first pastor of Pyeongchang, also confirms his role in the parish's establishment period.
Daehwa was later restored as a separate parish in 1993, while Pyeongchang Parish continued its own pastoral mission centered on Pyeongchang-eup and Mitan-myeon. The history of 평창 성당 can therefore be understood as a continuation of the earlier Catholic presence in Daehwa together with a 1965 reorganization that made Pyeongchang-eup the new center of local parish life.
