About this place
Nampyeong Mission Station belongs to Jeongseon Parish in the Yeongpyeongjeong district of the Diocese of Wonju and is the local Catholic community through which believers in Bukpyeong-myeon, Jeongseon, remain connected with their parish. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea explicitly lists Jeongseon Parish as its mother parish, confirming that Nampyeong is not an independent parish but a mission station maintained within the pastoral territory of Jeongseon Parish.
In a mountainous region such as Jeongseon, where villages and daily-life areas are widely dispersed, a mission station helps bridge the physical distance to the parish church and keeps local Catholics connected with one another. Nampyeong fulfills this role in a form different from a parish where a priest resides, preserving local prayer and community memory while linking believers to their parish. Volatile details such as current schedules or personnel are not included here. The mission-station form is significant because it preserves the continuity of a Catholic community even where the number of local believers is limited. When visiting or researching Nampyeong, it is more accurate to understand it not as an independent parish church but as a local center supporting Catholics in Bukpyeong-myeon within the broad pastoral territory of Jeongseon Parish.
History & origins
The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records the foundation of Nampyeong Mission Station in February 1957. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea, meanwhile, records that Jeongseon Parish itself was separated from Yeongwol Parish and established on April 12 of the same year. Nampyeong’s community therefore reaches back to the period immediately before the formal establishment of Jeongseon Parish, although the published sources do not establish with certainty which parish directly supervised Nampyeong at the very beginning.
After Jeongseon Parish was established, Nampyeong became part of the pastoral structure for the Jeongseon area and is still officially listed today as a mission station under Jeongseon Parish. This shows how, in the late 1950s, parish and mission-station structures were organized together to connect Catholics across the wide mountainous region.
The currently available official sources do not verify the date of Nampyeong’s first mission-station building, the detailed movements of its earliest Catholic families, or later rebuilding and relocation. The history is therefore limited to the verified foundation record and parish relationship, without adding unsupported details.
