Nam-myeon Mission

About this place

Nammyeon Mission Station is a mission station of the Diocese of Wonju and a local Catholic community through which believers in Nam-myeon, Jeongseon County, continue their life of faith. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Nammyeon among the mission stations of the Diocese of Wonju, while church-historical sources for the Jeongseon area also show that it has long been one of the Catholic communities in this mountainous region. In a broad and mountainous county, its importance lies in providing a nearby place where Catholics living away from a parish church can gather.

Catholic pastoral life in the Jeongseon area developed through a network of a parish and several mission stations. Unlike a parish with a resident priest, a mission station depends greatly on the participation and cooperation of local Catholics to sustain community life. Nammyeon has likewise served within that structure as a link between Catholics in southern Jeongseon and the local church. The date of establishment in the official directory, however, does not agree with an older church-historical account, so while the present identity of the community is clear, its precise origin is treated as unresolved in the history section. This distinction does not question the existence of the current community; it avoids assigning a foundation date beyond what the sources can securely establish.
