About this place
Myeongnyun-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Seowonju district of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Catholics in and around Myeongnyun 2-dong. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Saint Monica as the parish patron and shows that its current pastoral territory includes all of Myeongnyun 2-dong together with parts of Dangae-dong and Musil-dong. The place should therefore be understood not simply as a church building, but as the parish responsible for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for Catholics in this part of the city.
Myeongnyun-dong is a comparatively recent parish, formed in response to changes in the residential areas of Wonju. Under the patronage of Saint Monica, it provides a local setting for Catholics to live their faith within family and everyday life. The current directory also records the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood as the religious community serving the parish. More important than changeable schedules or the names of current personnel is the parish’s role as the pastoral center that gathers Myeongnyun-dong and neighboring residential areas into one Catholic community. A parish created during the city’s modern growth now sustains the ordinary sacramental and communal life of local Catholics.
History & origins
Myeongnyun-dong Parish was born through a process of separating from Gugok Parish in response to the expansion of residential districts in Wonju. The Catholic Times reported that the Gugok Parish community spent about two years and five months preparing for the new parish and the construction of its church. That work culminated on August 26, 2011, when Bishop James Kim Ji-seok of Wonju presided over the dedication of the new church. The building was designed with the principal church, catechetical rooms, meeting rooms, a hall, and other spaces needed for parish community life.
Soon after the dedication, Myeongnyun-dong Parish was formally established on September 2, 2011. The Diocese of Wonju separated it from Gugok Parish and initially assigned it Myeongnyun 2-dong together with parts of Musil-dong and Dangae-dong. The creation of the parish meant that an independent pastoral community could begin around the newly completed church, and it reflected the diocese’s effort to serve Catholics more closely in the rapidly developing southwestern residential areas of Wonju.
The present Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Myeongnyun-dong in the Seowonju district and gives its territory as all of Myeongnyun 2-dong together with portions of Dangae-dong and Musil-dong. Administrative wording and the detailed boundary have been adjusted since the parish’s founding, but its original purpose remains clear: it was created from Gugok Parish to serve new residential communities. Under the patronage of Saint Monica, the parish has grown from the 2011 dedication and establishment into a stable local Catholic community in the modern city of Wonju.
