About this place
Musil-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Seowonju district of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Catholics in Musil-dong together with parts of Dangae-dong and Seogok-ri in Panbu-myeon. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Blessed John Choe Hae-seong as the parish patron and records the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary of Mirinae as the religious community serving the parish. The church is the local center where Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
Musil-dong is a relatively young parish formed amid the expansion of new residential districts in Wonju. Its significance therefore lies less in an old architectural heritage than in providing a center of Catholic life for a newly formed urban community. The patronage of Blessed John Choe Hae-seong keeps the memory of the Korean martyr tradition present within a modern residential parish, linking a new local community with the older history of Korean Catholic faith. Musil-dong Catholic Church today shows how a parish created alongside urban growth can become rooted as a stable place of faith and community life. It is also an example of a new residential area and a parish community taking shape and growing together.
History & origins
Musil-dong Parish was established in 2014 in response to expanding residential districts and increased pastoral needs in Wonju. The Catholic Times records that on September 19, 2014, the Diocese of Wonju created Musil-dong Parish by separating the area from Ilsan-dong Parish. The new parish initially belonged to Wonju District 1 and was assigned Musil-dong, Dangae-dong, and part of Panbu-myeon, with Blessed John Choe Hae-seong as patron. Its establishment brought the number of parishes in the Diocese of Wonju to forty-eight.
This was not a case of an old mission station being elevated to parish status, but of a new pastoral community being created by dividing the territory of an existing urban parish. As residential development and population increased around Musil-dong, the division of the large area formerly served from Ilsan-dong allowed Catholics to build parish life closer to where they lived. Choosing Blessed John Choe Hae-seong, a Korean martyr, as patron from the beginning also linked a modern new-town parish with the martyr tradition of the Korean Church.
The current Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea gives the same foundation date, September 19, 2014, and lists Musil-dong, Dangae-dong, and Seogok-ri in Panbu-myeon as its present territory. The district designation is now Seowonju, but the essential pastoral purpose of the new parish continues. Musil-dong’s history is therefore the story of a parish created through urban expansion that quickly became an independent sacramental and liturgical community for Catholics in the surrounding residential area.
