About this place
Munmak Catholic Church is a parish in the Seowonju district of the Diocese of Wonju and serves as the central Catholic community of Munmak-eup. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea gives the official parish name as “Munmak,” lists Saint Peter the Apostle as patron, and defines the current parish territory as all of Munmak-eup except Buron-myeon. Today the parish remains a living local community where Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish activities.
Munmak is also a place in which a relatively long Catholic tradition in the Wonju region has accumulated, and the present church continues that local history of faith. For visitors, however, it is important not to view the place only through its old building or past events, but to see how a historic Catholic community continues in present-day parish life. The current directory lists no mission stations under the parish, indicating that pastoral life for Munmak-eup is now centered directly on the parish church. Under the patronage of Saint Peter the Apostle, Munmak brings together the memory of long local evangelization with the ordinary life of faith practiced by Catholics today.
History & origins
Catholic life in the Munmak area began well before the formal establishment of the parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records Catholic communities and mission stations in the wider Munmak area in the late nineteenth century, served by a succession of missionary priests. The local community later weakened, but the direct line leading to the present parish was re-formed around 1938. Both the Wonju municipal place-name record and the Catholic Encyclopedia state that several Catholic families began gathering in the home of Park Il-jun and that a mission station developed from those meetings.
As the community grew, a mission hall was built near the present parish site in 1948, but it was destroyed during the Korean War. The community then began rebuilding. The Wonju municipal record summarizes the present church as having been built in 1956, while the Catholic Encyclopedia explains that construction toward a future parish was actively pursued from 1956 and that the church and rectory were completed the following year. The wording differs in detail, but both sources agree on the broader course: the worship space lost in the war was rebuilt in the mid-1950s as the community prepared to become an independent parish.
In 1957 Munmak Mission Station came under the newly established Haksung-dong Parish, and on September 10, 1958, it was elevated to Munmak Parish. With the appointment of its first resident pastor, the former mission community acquired an independent parish structure. In 1965, when the Diocese of Wonju was separated from the Diocese of Chuncheon and formally established, Munmak became part of the new diocese. Despite the limitations of a rural setting, the parish continued to care for local Catholics and surrounding mission communities.
The present Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea also gives September 10, 1958, as the parish foundation date. Munmak’s history thus moves through several stages: early Catholic presence in the region, the re-formation of a local community in the 1930s, destruction and rebuilding during and after the Korean War, and finally elevation to parish status. The church that stands today is the accumulated result of those changes and a local historical site showing how a mission community grew into a continuing parish of the Diocese of Wonju.
