About this place
Macha Mission Station is a Catholic mission community in Macha-ri, Buk-myeon, Yeongwol County, belonging to the Diocese of Wonju. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea currently lists it as a mission station in the Yeongpyeongjeong district of the diocese. Unlike an independent parish with a resident priest, a mission station is a smaller local Catholic community in which the faithful sustain prayer and liturgical life together. Macha therefore serves as a nearby place through which Catholics in northern Yeongwol remain connected with the pastoral life of the diocese and parish structure.
Macha has an unusual background in that the local Catholic community once grew enough to become a parish before later returning to mission-station status. Its present form should not be understood merely as a reduction in size. Rather, the place shows how the shape of a Catholic community can change along with the social circumstances of a region. The mission station that remains today acts as a point of continuity and memory within that longer story. Visitors can best understand Macha not as a large parish church with a resident priest, but as a small community space preserved and sustained by local Catholics over time. More important than the size of the mission station is the fact that Catholic faith itself has continued here within the local community.
History & origins
The documented history of the Catholic community at Macha becomes clear in the early 1960s, when it was a mission station of Yeongwol Parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that during the pastorate of Father Choe Dong-o, a mission chapel was completed at Macha-ri and blessed on October 16, 1962. The local community thus gained a dedicated place in which Catholics living at a distance from the parish church could sustain their common life of faith, and the chapel became a foundation for the community’s subsequent growth.
After the Diocese of Wonju was separated from the Diocese of Chuncheon and established in 1965, Macha-ri Mission Station was elevated to a parish on September 8 of that same year and separated from Yeongwol Parish. Becoming an independent parish at the very beginning of the new diocese indicates the pastoral importance the community had reached at the time. The parish arrangement, however, did not last long. The Catholic Encyclopedia records that Macha-ri Parish was closed in January 1968 and that the jurisdiction of related mission stations was again adjusted under Yeongwol Parish.
Today the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea once again lists Macha as a mission station of the Diocese of Wonju. Its history can therefore be read as a movement from mission station to parish and back to mission station. The period as an independent parish and the small community that remains today are not separate stories; they are successive forms of one Catholic community adapting to changing local circumstances. Macha Mission Station preserves that continuity as a significant place in the local history of the Diocese of Wonju.
