About this place
Jucheon Parish is a Catholic parish in the Yeongpyeongjeong District of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Jucheon-myeon and surrounding rural areas of Yeongwol County. Its patron is St. Joseph, and it is now an independent parish with no mission stations. It serves as a Catholic center for the western part of Yeongwol, where Catholics living across a dispersed rural area gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
Jucheon sustained its Catholic life for many years as a mission-station community before growing into an independent parish. For that reason, the present church is not simply a parish building created at one moment; it stands on a long process in which rural Catholics maintained their mission community, built a new church, and prepared for parish status. Visitors can best understand Jucheon as a local community that grew from a mission station into a parish within the mountainous and rural pastoral structure of the Diocese of Wonju.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Jucheon existed as a mission station long before the establishment of the present parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea's history of Yeongwol Parish records that Jucheon mission station was transferred to Uirim-dong Parish on July 1, 1969, confirming that a mission community already existed by that time. A contemporary report on jurisdictional adjustments that year likewise records Jucheon mission station as being assigned to Uirim-dong Parish.
Even as rural populations declined, Catholics at Jucheon mission station worked to strengthen the foundations of an independent faith community. From the 1980s they voluntarily promoted the construction of a new church, and on October 20, 1993 the new Jucheon mission-station church was dedicated in a ceremony presided over by Bishop James Kim Ji-seok of Wonju. Catholic Times reported that the project aimed to re-evangelize the rural community and strengthen bonds among the faithful, and that the mission community continued preparations for eventual elevation to parish status.
After this long period as a mission station, Jucheon was established as an independent parish on January 16, 2001. The current Catholic directory lists Jucheon as a parish of the Yeongpyeongjeong District in the Diocese of Wonju, with St. Joseph as its patron. Jucheon's history thus illustrates how a small mountain-rural mission community sustained itself over many years, built a church, and eventually grew into an independent parish.
