About this place

Im-gye Parish is a Catholic parish in the Yeongpyeongjeong District of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Im-gye-myeon and part of Namgok-ri in Yeoryang-myeon, Jeongseon County. Its patron is the Archangel Gabriel, and the community is currently centered on the parish church without mission stations. It is the parish for the eastern part of Jeongseon where Catholics scattered across a mountainous area gather for Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community life.

The Im-gye area had long been included within the pastoral territory of the Catholic Church in Jeongseon, but today's Im-gye Parish serves local Catholics as an independent parish unit. Unlike a large urban parish, it is shaped by a broad mountainous living area, and its significance lies not only in the church building but in the pastoral community through which local Catholics gather regularly and remain connected. Visitors can therefore understand it as the independent parish responsible for the Im-gye area within the Yeongpyeongjeong District of the Diocese of Wonju.

History & origins

The Im-gye area belonged to Catholic pastoral territory in Jeongseon long before the present parish was established. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that when Jeongseon Parish was founded on April 12, 1957, its territory included Im-gye-myeon. This shows that Catholics in Im-gye did not begin as an independent parish but were initially served within the broad parish structure of the Jeongseon area.

Over time, the network of parishes and mission stations within Jeongseon County became more differentiated, and the Im-gye community grew into a separate pastoral unit. Publicly available official and Church-historical sources, however, do not establish a continuous detailed chronology of the intermediate jurisdictions through which Im-gye passed between its period under Jeongseon Parish and its eventual establishment as a parish. For that reason, no unverified mission-station dates or jurisdictional changes are added here.

The current Catholic directory gives April 5, 2012 as the date of establishment of Im-gye Parish. From that point it is recorded as an independent parish of the Yeongpyeongjeong District in the Diocese of Wonju, with the Archangel Gabriel as patron and responsibility for Im-gye-myeon and part of the adjacent area. The verified historical arc is therefore a transition from inclusion within the broad territory of Jeongseon Parish to an independent parish serving the Im-gye area.
