About this place
Ilsan-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the North Wonju District of the Diocese of Wonju, with Mary, Queen of Peace, as its patron. It serves a local community centered on Ilsan-dong and parts of Hakseong-dong and Dangae-dong, and a community of the Sisters of the Holy Family is present in the parish. As an urban parish with no mission stations, it is a local center where Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life are carried out together.
The parish was created as population and Catholic demographics in central Wonju changed, requiring parts of the territories of Won-dong and Hakseong-dong parishes to be assigned to a new community. Its current territory still links portions of several urban neighborhoods, so it is more accurate to view it as a parish connecting several living areas of northern central Wonju rather than defining it only by the name Ilsan-dong. Its origin as a parish separated from the cathedral parish and the older Hakseong-dong Parish reflects the broader expansion of Catholic life in Wonju city.
History & origins
Ilsan-dong Parish was established as part of a reorganization of pastoral territories prompted by the growth of the Catholic community in central Wonju. The Catholic Church directory in Korea gives April 19, 1976 as the parish's date of establishment. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea's history of Hakseong-dong Parish likewise records that in April 1976 Ilsan-dong and parts of Hakseong 1-dong and 2-dong were transferred to the newly created Ilsan-dong Parish, while the history of Won-dong Cathedral Parish also states that Ilsan-dong Parish was separated and established in April 1976.
Thus, Ilsan-dong was not simply carved out of one parish; it was formed by adjusting the boundaries of both Won-dong and Hakseong-dong to create a new pastoral community. The Catholic Encyclopedia records 518 parishioners at the time of establishment. As central Wonju continued to develop and its population shifted, the parish boundaries were adjusted again when neighboring parishes were created.
In particular, when Usan-dong Parish was established in 1995, boundaries in the North Wonju area were reorganized and some territories were reassigned. Through these changes, Ilsan-dong Parish has retained its historical character as an independent parish formed during the expansion of Catholic life in Wonju city in the 1970s.
