About this place
Hwaam Mission Station is a Catholic mission station under Jeongseon Parish in the Yeongpyeongjeong District of the Diocese of Wonju. It serves as the local community through which Catholics in Hwaam-myeon remain connected with their parish. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea registers Hwaam under Jeongseon Parish, making clear its role as a local center where Catholics in a mountainous area some distance from the parish church can gather for prayer and liturgical life.
Hwaam-myeon is one of the mountain and valley communities of Jeongseon, and in such geography a mission station has particular importance for sustaining Catholic community life. Hwaam is not an independent parish but a local community within the pastoral care of Jeongseon Parish. It is therefore best understood as a place that illustrates the Korean Catholic structure linking a parish with smaller rural mission stations rather than as a separate parish church. The continued presence of the mission station itself reflects the network through which Jeongseon Parish has served Catholics across a broad mountainous region.
History & origins
The beginning of Hwaam Mission Station is closely connected with the establishment of Jeongseon Parish. Jeongseon Parish was separated from Yeongwol Parish and established on April 12, 1957, and the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records Hwaam Mission Station as having been founded on October 7 of the same year. Hwaam therefore emerged in the wider process by which the newly established parish organized local communities to care for Catholics scattered across the mountainous region.
From its early years, Jeongseon Parish placed considerable emphasis on serving Catholics through mission stations in outlying mountain communities. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records the formation and expansion of several such communities under the parish, and Hwaam remained part of this network. When the Diocese of Wonju was separated from the Diocese of Chuncheon and established in 1965, Jeongseon Parish and its dependent communities entered the pastoral structure of the new diocese.
Hwaam is still registered today as a mission station under Jeongseon Parish. Public sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct the full architectural history or any relocations of the chapel, but the continuity of the parish-mission relationship from its 1957 foundation is clear. The significance of Hwaam's history lies less in a single major building event than in the long continuation of a small Catholic community linking believers in a broad mountainous area with their parish.
