About this place
Hoengseong Catholic Church is a parish in the Hoengseong District of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Catholics primarily in Hoengseong-eup and Gonggeun-myeon. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea names the Queen of Heaven as its patron and records the parish as a center linking rural communities and mission stations. Hoengseong Church also appears on the Diocese of Wonju's list of shrines and historic Catholic sites, giving it a character that combines its present parish role with the preservation of the Catholic history of the Hoengseong area.
Catholic history in Hoengseong reaches back to nineteenth-century Catholic villages, long before the parish itself was established. Because of this deep foundation, the parish has served a wide rural area through mission-station ministry, education, welfare, and social activity. Its rural setting also shaped a history of active participation in Catholic farmers' movements and later in life and environmental initiatives. Hoengseong Church is therefore more than a town-center parish church: it is a place that connects the faith of older Catholic villages with a modern parish community and has accompanied the changing life of the surrounding countryside.
History & origins
Catholic villages were already present in the Hoengseong area in the 1830s, and by the time of the Byeongin Persecution in 1866 it was one of the strongest Catholic regions in Gangwon. Arrests during the persecution dispersed many communities, but mission stations were re-established from the 1880s and continued under Pungsuwon Parish. Building on this older network, Hoengseong was separated from Pungsuwon and established as an independent parish on March 20, 1930.
The new parish began as a rural parish responsible for a broad area of Hoengseong County and its surroundings, including seventeen mission stations. During the 1930s it improved its church facilities and promoted evangelization through education by operating a civic school and night schools at mission stations. After the church was damaged during the Korean War, a new church was built in 1955 with assistance from the U.S. military and was dedicated the following year. Around the same period, halls were built for several mission stations, including Jeonggeum, Anheung, Cheongil, Dunnae, and Chudong, strengthening the parish's rural pastoral network.
The parish's diocesan jurisdiction also changed over time. It moved from the Seoul Vicariate to the newly established Chuncheon jurisdiction in 1939 and became part of the Diocese of Wonju through a diocesan boundary adjustment in 1969. In the 1970s the parish was active in the Catholic Farmers' Movement, and from the late 1980s it expanded its social engagement through environmental protection, life movements, and the promotion of organic farming.
In 1994 the Dunnae mission station was raised to parish status, and some territories and mission communities were transferred to the new parish. Hoengseong continued to reorganize its pastoral responsibilities as the region changed, and in 2000 it marked its seventieth anniversary by completing an education and welfare center. The history of Hoengseong Church is thus a long development from persecuted Catholic villages to a network of mission stations and a rural parish that broadened its relationship with local society through education, farmers' movements, and welfare.
