About this place
Heungeop Catholic Church is a parish in the Seowonju District of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Catholics in Heungeop-myeon and Gwirae-myeon of Wonju. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea names St. Andrew Kim Taegon as its patron and records it as a rural parish responsible for several mission stations. In the area where urban Wonju meets the countryside, the parish church is both the center of liturgical and communal life and the mother parish linking Catholic communities scattered among the surrounding mission stations.
The significance of Heungeop Parish becomes clearer when seen together with the long mission-station tradition of the area. Its territory includes old Catholic communities such as Daean-ri, where an early twentieth-century hanok-style mission chapel remains. Heungeop Parish carries this rural Catholic heritage within its present pastoral structure. Although it became an independent parish relatively recently, it stands on a longer history of pastoral care for Heungeop and its mission communities under Wondong Cathedral Parish. Heungeop Church therefore connects the vitality of a newer parish with the memory of much older rural Catholic communities.
History & origins
The history of Heungeop as an independent parish begins in 2009, but the Catholic roots of the area are older. The history of Wondong Cathedral Parish records the establishment of a Heungeop mission station at the end of 1954. At the time, Wondong was expanding its pastoral care through mission stations in rural areas around Wonju, and Catholics in Heungeop were connected to the parish through this local mission community. Daean-ri Mission Station in the same broader area preserves an even older Catholic-village tradition, showing the deeper roots of Catholicism around Heungeop.
As Wonju grew and pastoral needs expanded, a separate parish was eventually created for the Heungeop area. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records September 9, 2009 as the foundation date of Heungeop Parish. When Heungeop was separated from Wondong Cathedral Parish, a distinct pastoral center was established for Catholics in Heungeop-myeon and Gwirae-myeon, and Daean-ri Mission Station came under the new parish. This marked a reorganization of rural Catholic communities that had long lived their faith through mission stations into an independent parish structure.
Since its establishment, Heungeop Parish has continued this regional continuity together with its mission stations. Daean-ri's centennial celebration and the blessing of its education building in 2010 took place after the mission station had become part of Heungeop Parish. The present parish therefore holds together the memory of mission-station ministry dating from the 1950s and the pastoral life of an independent parish since 2009. Its history shows how parish and mission communities in the rural southwest of Wonju have successively supported and expanded Catholic community life.
