About this place
학성동 성당 is a parish in the Bukwonju district of the Diocese of Wonju. Its pastoral territory includes Hakseong-dong and Dangae-dong, part of Usan-dong, and the Manjong area of Hojeo-myeon. Its patron is St. Francis Xavier, and the current Catholic Directory of Korea records one mission station under the parish.
A distinctive feature of 학성동 성당 is that it connects older urban neighborhoods of Wonju with areas toward the outskirts. It is a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for urban Catholics while also remaining linked with a dependent mission community. It therefore forms an important part of the pastoral network of northern Wonju. Beyond simply being an older parish, it has also served historically as one of the local centers from which other parishes were later separated as Wonju grew.
