About this place

Gugok Catholic Church is a parish of the Seowonju district in the Diocese of Wonju, forming a Catholic community centered on Dangu-dong and the Gugok and Dangwan residential areas of the city. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records St. Cecilia as the parish patron, notes the presence of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres in parish apostolate, and states that the parish has one mission station under its care. It is an urban parish where Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, fellowship, and service are carried on in a residential district.

Although Gugok is a relatively young parish formed as southern Wonju's residential areas expanded, its jurisdiction includes Hurisa Mission Station, whose history predates the parish itself. The present character of Gugok therefore brings together a newly formed urban parish community and the tradition of an older local mission station. Important for understanding the place are the way parish and mission station remain linked within one pastoral community under the patronage of St. Cecilia and the fact that parishioners themselves took part in building the church and shaping the community. The coexistence of a modern urban parish and an older mission-station continuity within one jurisdiction is another distinctive feature of Gugok.

History & origins

Gugok Parish was established as new residential districts expanded in southern Wonju. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records February 17, 1998, as the date of its foundation. A church-historical account also confirms that on the same date Hurisa Mission Station, previously under Dangu-dong Parish, was transferred to the jurisdiction of Gugok Parish. The new parish thus began by serving Catholics in a newly developing urban area while also receiving an already existing mission-station community.

As the parish community took root, plans were made for a dedicated new church. According to the Catholic Times, construction began in April 2003. Parishioners carried out a campaign to offer three million decades of the Rosary for the building project and participated in building-fund contributions, bazaars, and other activities. Construction continued for about one year and seven months. The detailed Catholic Times account makes clear that the new church was prepared through the long-term spiritual and financial participation of the entire parish, rather than simply being provided as an institutional facility.

The new church was completed in 2004 and dedicated by Bishop Jacobus Kim Ji-seok on November 22. The multi-level building included a small chapel, meeting space, presbytery, main church, and choir loft, providing facilities that could accommodate the pastoral life of a growing urban parish.

Gugok Parish has since continued under the patronage of St. Cecilia while caring for both the parish community and Hurisa Mission Station. Its history combines the growth of southern Wonju, the reassignment of an older mission station, and the direct participation of parishioners in constructing their church, all within the development of a single local parish.
