About this place
Eosangcheon Mission Station belongs to the Jecheon District of the Diocese of Wonju and is under the pastoral jurisdiction of Sinbaek-dong Parish. The Catholic Church in Korea directory identifies it as a local Catholic community at 955 Eosangcheon-ro in Eosangcheon-myeon, Danyang County, and explicitly names Sinbaek-dong as its mother parish. Its essential character is that of a mission station enabling Catholics in Eosangcheon-myeon, some distance from the parish church in Jecheon, to sustain a local life of faith.
The official territory of Sinbaek-dong Parish likewise includes Eosangcheon-myeon in Danyang County and Eosangcheon Mission Station. Eosangcheon is therefore not an independent parish but a local community point within the pastoral network of Sinbaek-dong Parish. The connection between parish and mission station across municipal boundaries also helps explain how the Jecheon District of the Diocese of Wonju serves both Jecheon and Danyang.
History & origins
The Catholic Church in Korea directory records April 20, 1986, as the establishment date of Eosangcheon Mission Station. Eosangcheon was not an independent parish but was served within the mission-station system of parishes in the Jecheon area. The history of Namcheon-dong Parish in the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea lists Eosangcheon among its mission stations, confirming a period before the creation of Sinbaek-dong Parish in 2004 when the community belonged to Namcheon-dong’s pastoral network.
When the Diocese of Wonju reorganized pastoral territory in southeastern Jecheon, it established Sinbaek-dong Parish on February 12, 2004. The Catholic Times reported that Eosangcheon Mission Station in Eosangcheon-myeon, Danyang County, was included in the new parish together with Sinbaek-dong, Gomyeong-dong, Daeryang-dong, Heukseok-dong, Duhak-dong, and Jajak-dong. From that point, Eosangcheon was directly linked to the newly established Sinbaek-dong Parish.
The current directory still names Sinbaek-dong as the mother parish of Eosangcheon. The mission station’s history can therefore be traced through its establishment in the 1980s, a period under Namcheon-dong Parish, and the 2004 reorganization that placed it under Sinbaek-dong Parish.
