About this place
Dunnae Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Wonju and serves as a local center where Catholics in Dunnae-myeon, Hoengseong, continue their life of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists St. Paul the Apostle as the parish patron and confirms the presence of the Mirinae Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary in the parish apostolate.
Dunnae is a mountainous living area separated from central Hoengseong, so the existence of an independent parish allows local Catholics to receive regular liturgical and pastoral care close to home. The parish grew from a mission-station community formed by local believers, and the present church is the central place where that Catholic life continues within a stable parish structure. Details such as current Mass times or personnel are omitted because they may change. The patronage of St. Paul the Apostle and the presence of a religious congregation show a parish structure in which liturgical life and the apostolate of religious sisters meet. For visitors, the important point is that the church is not merely a local facility but the center of a community that grew from a mission station into an independent parish and continues its Catholic life today.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Dunnae developed as a mission station under Hoengseong Parish before it became an independent parish. In April 1980, the Mirinae Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary entered the Dunnae mission station and opened St. Joseph Daycare, expanding the community’s activity beyond liturgy to include service for local children and families. This period shows how a mountain-area mission station could become a center for both Catholic life and the needs of the local community.
The mission-station site was expanded in 1992, and in 1993 a new daycare facility was prepared, strengthening the physical foundation before parish elevation. As the local Catholic community grew and the need for more stable pastoral care in the Dunnae area increased, preparations continued to transform the mission station into an independent parish.
On February 2, 1994, Dunnae Mission Station was elevated to parish status in the Diocese of Wonju. With the establishment of the parish, pastoral care for Dunnae-myeon and nearby areas could be organized within an independent parish structure, while the activities built up by religious sisters and lay Catholics during the mission-station years continued within the new parish.
After the parish was established, construction of a church moved forward, and the present church was dedicated in 1998. Dunnae Parish continued to combine Catholic life with educational and care activities, becoming a stable center for the mountain community. The sequence from mission station to parish and then to the building of a permanent church shows a gradual expansion of pastoral infrastructure in response to local needs. The fact that religious sisters had already begun childcare and local service while Dunnae was still a mission station shows that parish elevation was not sudden; institutional independence followed the accumulation of substantial community functions. The dedication of the church in 1998 can be seen as the point when a permanent physical space caught up with that earlier canonical and pastoral development.
