About this place
Danyang Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Wonju and serves as a center of Catholic life where believers in Danyang-eup and surrounding areas gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records St. John the Baptist as its patron and confirms the parish’s present role as a pastoral center linking the Catholic community of Danyang with its mission stations.
Danyang is a region whose urban structure changed dramatically with the construction of the Chungju Dam. The parish is therefore distinctive not simply as a place preserving an old church building, but as a Catholic community that experienced the relocation and reorganization of the town itself. The present church carries forward the faith and memory of the former Danyang town within the new living area and remains a central place connecting local Catholics through liturgy, prayer, and community life. Danyang Parish also serves as the center of a pastoral network linked with mission stations in surrounding areas, so its role cannot be fully understood if the church is seen only as a single building in Danyang-eup. Its present significance becomes clearer within the structure that connects the parish community in the town with Catholics in rural and mountainous areas.
History & origins
Danyang Parish was established on January 24, 1957. In November of that first year, the parish prepared a small two-story building, using the first floor as the church and the second as the rectory. Additional property was acquired in 1959, and a convent was added in 1961, gradually providing a more stable base for liturgy and pastoral work.
As the Catholic community grew, a larger church became necessary. A new church was completed in 1968 and blessed on December 22 of that year. During roughly the first decade, Maryknoll missioners served the parish and cared for mission stations throughout the Danyang area, after which Korean priests continued the pastoral work. In 1978, the Maepo community was separated as its own parish, further reorganizing the pastoral structure of the region.
Construction of the Chungju Dam in the 1980s brought the greatest spatial change in the parish’s history. As the old town of Danyang was designated for inundation, the church also had to relocate. The parish purchased the present site in December 1984 and began construction of a new church on May 20, 1985. Parishioners participated in the building effort through fundraising and service, including the sale of local agricultural products such as garlic and chili peppers.
The new church was completed and blessed on May 26, 1987. This move was more than the replacement of a building: as residents relocated because of the reservoir, the parish community also took root in a new place. The present Danyang church is the result of a continuous Catholic community that began as a small parish in the 1950s and endured major changes in regional development and settlement without losing its continuity. The relocation caused by the Chungju Dam was not simply a change of address for the parish. As the homes and social life of the local population were moved, the parish also had to re-establish its altar, liturgy, and communal memory in a new place. The direct participation of parishioners in building the new church remains a concrete record of that continuity.
