About this place

Dangu-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Wonju and serves as a center of faith where Catholics in Dangu-dong and the surrounding parts of Wonju gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records St. John the Apostle as the parish patron, while the parish’s official information presents Dangu-dong as a local parish responsible for liturgy, prayer, and community activities within the Diocese of Wonju.

Dangu-dong is part of an urban area whose patterns of life have changed substantially as Wonju has grown. The significance of the parish therefore lies not only in the history of its church building but in the local Catholic community that has continued to gather and transmit the faith across generations in a changing city. Today the church is a place where liturgy, faith formation, and parish activities meet, serving as a pastoral center connecting Catholics in the southern part of Wonju. The prayer and faith activities described in the parish’s official information show that the church is not limited to Sunday Mass but is also a community space where weekday Catholic life and relationships among parishioners continue. Dangu-dong is therefore best understood as a parish that organizes everyday Catholic life within the urban communities of southern Wonju.

History & origins

Dangu-dong Parish was established on December 5, 1960, after being separated from Wondong Parish. Before the formal establishment of the parish, construction of a church and rectory had begun in April 1960, and the work was completed that December, providing the physical base for the new parish’s liturgical and pastoral life. From its beginning the parish honored St. John the Apostle as its patron and formed a Catholic community for the southern part of Wonju.

In 1963, sisters of the Inbo Blessed Sacrament congregation entered the parish and took part in its apostolate. The parish then expanded its pastoral reach to mission stations and Catholics in surrounding areas. In 1972 a mission-station building was prepared in the Maeji area, strengthening the network that connected Catholics in the city with those on its outskirts.

A major flood in 1983 damaged parish facilities, but the community continued the work of recovery. In 1985 the parish expanded its facilities with an education hall, a new convent, and basement space for faith formation and community activities, and in 1988 a new rectory was prepared. These changes show how the parish repeatedly adapted its physical and pastoral infrastructure to the growth of the city and its Catholic population.

The history of Dangu-dong Parish illustrates the development of a local parish alongside the expansion of urban Wonju. A community separated from Wondong Parish grew through the cooperation of priests, religious sisters, and lay Catholics, gradually building up the educational, liturgical, and pastoral spaces that support the parish today. The records of the 1980s are particularly revealing: after flood damage, the parish did not merely restore what had been lost but rebuilt in a way that strengthened its educational and community functions. This phase of Dangu-dong’s growth reflects the accumulated cooperation of lay Catholics, religious sisters, and clergy in sustaining and expanding parish life.
