About this place
Daean-ri Mission Station is an old Catholic mission station and historic Catholic site maintained within the Diocese of Wonju and connected today with Heungeop Parish. Its surviving building is based on a traditional Korean wooden house form, preserving a view of early Catholic mission-station architecture and the life of a rural Catholic community that differs markedly from a modern parish church.
The significance of Daean-ri lies in more than the preservation of an old building. The site embodies the memory of Catholic families who settled in rural and mountainous areas after the persecutions and gathered around a mission station to sustain their faith. It is best understood not through changing details such as schedules or personnel, but through its distinctive adaptation of Korean timber architecture for Catholic liturgical use and through the memory of a longstanding Catholic village. Its preservation as a nationally registered cultural heritage property further confirms that historical value. For visitors, understanding the character of the site depends less on decorative grandeur than on observing how timber construction, spatial arrangement, roof form, and structure were adapted for Catholic liturgy. The mission-station building itself is historical evidence that explains both the life of the local Catholic community and the adaptation of Catholic architecture in modern Korea.
History & origins
The Catholic community around Daean-ri is linked to a longstanding Catholic village tradition formed in the late nineteenth century. The surviving mission-station building dates from the early twentieth century; Wonju City’s cultural-heritage record places its construction between 1900 and 1906. It preserves the structure of a traditional Korean hanok while adapting the interior for Catholic liturgical use, making it an important example of a rural mission-station church from that period.
On November 12, 1910, Bishop Gustave Mutel, Vicar Apostolic of Korea, visited and blessed the mission station. This is an important point at which both the Daean-ri Catholic community and the surviving building are clearly documented in early twentieth-century church history. The mission station continued to serve local Catholics while retaining its wooden hanok form and simple liturgical interior.
Over time, Daean-ri came to be valued not only as a local mission station but as a historic site preserving traces of early rural Catholic life and architecture in Korea. Its significance lies especially in the way Catholic liturgical functions were incorporated into traditional Korean architecture before Western-style church buildings became widespread.
In recognition of this value, the building was registered on December 31, 2004, as Registered Cultural Property No. 140 and continues to be preserved under Korea’s national registered-heritage system. The history of Daean-ri Mission Station therefore brings together the faith life of a Catholic village, traditional architecture, and the preservation of cultural heritage in a single place. After its heritage designation, the building came to be treated not simply as an old facility still in use, but as a place where the form of early mission-station architecture and the history of a local Catholic village should be preserved together. The way Daean-ri is understood today as a Catholic historic site reflects recognition of both the continuity of the faith community and the rarity of its architectural heritage.
