About this place
천곡동 성당 is a parish in the Yeongdong district of the Diocese of Wonju. Its pastoral territory is centered on Cheongok-dong in Donghae and also includes Pyeongneung-dong and part of Hyoga-dong. Its patron is the Good Shepherd, and the Catholic Directory of Korea lists it as a parish without dependent mission stations. Within the urban life of Donghae, it serves as a local center where Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
The parish is distinctive not as an old mountain mission station that gradually became a parish, but as a modern parish created when urban growth made it necessary to divide the broad territory of an older parish. It provides a stable pastoral base for Catholics in Cheongok-dong and nearby residential areas and represents the way the parish structure of the Donghae area expanded in response to the changing city.
History & origins
The background to the establishment of a separate parish in Cheongok-dong was the urbanization of Donghae. The history of Bukpyeong Parish records that the growth of the cement industry in the early 1970s brought an increase in residents within its territory, and that the urban area expanded rapidly after Donghae became a city in 1980. Bukpyeong Parish repaired its church facilities and developed an education center as the Catholic population grew, but the pastoral conditions of the expanding city were making one large parish increasingly difficult to serve.
On January 28, 1992, the Diocese of Wonju separated the Cheongok-dong area from Bukpyeong Parish and erected 천곡동 성당 as a new parish. A contemporary report in the Catholic Times and the historical account of Bukpyeong Parish both record the establishment on the same date, providing a clear starting point for the parish history.
The creation of the parish was part of the Church's reorganization of pastoral territories in the Donghae area in response to industrialization and expanding residential districts. Dividing a new urban parish from Bukpyeong brought the celebration of Mass and the sacraments closer to the daily lives of local Catholics, and 천곡동 성당 has continued since then as an independent parish community.
