About this place
청전동 성당 is a parish in the Jecheon district of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Catholics in Cheongjeon-dong and the surrounding urban area of Jecheon. Its patron is Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and the current Catholic Directory of Korea lists it as an urban parish without dependent mission stations. In the northern part of central Jecheon, it serves as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
Together with nearby parishes such as Uirim-dong, 청전동 성당 forms part of the parish structure of urban Jecheon and is significant for serving a more finely divided pastoral territory within the city. Unlike a rural parish responsible for several distant mission stations, its character is that of a parish centered on a relatively concentrated urban population, supporting the ordinary faith life of local Catholics close to where they live.
History & origins
Before becoming an independent parish, the Cheongjeon-dong area belonged to Uirim-dong Parish. The historical entry for Uirim-dong Parish in the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records Cheongjeon-dong and Jangnak-dong within its pastoral territory and describes a broader process in which parish boundaries in urban Jecheon were adjusted as the Catholic community grew.
In February 1990, Cheongjeon-dong Parish was separated from Uirim-dong Parish. The current Catholic Directory of Korea records February 8, 1990 as the establishment date. The Cheongjeon-dong area thus changed from one sector of Uirim-dong Parish into a distinct parish community, further dividing the pastoral network of central Jecheon.
Publicly accessible Church history sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct later building projects or major facility changes with confidence. The secure central event in the parish's history is therefore the transition from a community within Uirim-dong's territory to an independent parish in 1990. The present 천주교 청전동 성당 continues the parish structure created by that reorganization of Catholic pastoral care in Jecheon.
