About this place

청일 성당 is a parish in the Hoengseong district of the Diocese of Wonju, with pastoral responsibility for Cheongil-myeon and Gapcheon-myeon in Hoengseong County. Its patron is the Holy Trinity, and the Catholic Directory of Korea lists two mission stations under the parish. It functions as a regional pastoral center that connects Catholics scattered across a broad rural area through the relationship between the parish church and its mission stations.

The present character of 청일 성당 is best understood not simply through the church building but through the communal structure formed by the parish and its mission stations. The parish community in Cheongil-myeon serves as the center while its pastoral territory extends into neighboring Gapcheon-myeon, enabling Catholics in the area to remain connected to Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. This gives the parish a distinctly rural pastoral role.

History & origins

The Catholic community of Cheongil took shape as a mission station long before the present parish was established. The historical record of Hoengseong Parish notes the construction of a mission-station hall at Cheongil in September 1958. At that time, Cheongil belonged to the wide rural territory served by Hoengseong Parish together with several mission stations, and the hall provided an important base where Catholics could gather and maintain their faith in an area without a resident priest.

When the Diocese of Wonju was separated from the Diocese of Chuncheon and established in 1965, Hoengseong Parish and the Cheongil community became part of the history of the new diocese. As the local Church's organization changed over the following decades, the Cheongil mission community continued to serve as a center of faith for Catholics in the rural area.

The Diocese of Wonju erected Cheongil as an independent parish on September 10, 2008. The current Catholic Directory of Korea records the same date as the parish's establishment, and the parish now serves Cheongil-myeon and Gapcheon-myeon together with two mission stations. This history shows a community that preserved its local foundation for decades as a mission station before becoming an independent parish.
