About this place
Bukpyeong Catholic Church is a parish in the Yeongdong district of the Diocese of Wonju, located in Donghae, Gangwon State. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Saint Joseph the Worker as its patron and records the parish as having one mission station while serving several residential areas in southern Donghae. In a region shaped by the development of an industrial city, the parish is the pastoral center where Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and sustain community life.
The parish shares its name with “Bukpyeong Mission Station” in Bukpyeong-myeon, Jeongseon County, but the two are separate places. Bukpyeong Catholic Church in this entry is an independent parish in Donghae, and the Catholic Encyclopedia links present-day Samhwa Mission Station to its history. Visitors should therefore check both the administrative location and whether a place is a parish or mission station. The present identity of Bukpyeong is that of an independent parish in Donghae, while its historical growth amid mining, cement industry, and urban development is treated separately in the history section. The directory’s record that the parish currently has one mission station also shows that its pastoral network extends beyond the parish church itself to a smaller local community.
History & origins
The history of Bukpyeong Parish in Donghae begins on April 25, 1958. Both the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea and the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea record that the parish was established by separation from the Catholic community serving the Samcheok area. Relief work and evangelization were active after its foundation, and the number of Catholics grew rapidly during the early years as the local community itself changed.
When the Diocese of Wonju was established in March 1965, Bukpyeong Parish became part of the new diocese. In December of the same year, the Dogye area was separated to form its own parish. During the 1970s, the expansion of cement factories and other industrial facilities increased the population around Bukpyeong and changed the pastoral environment. The parish developed its liturgical, educational, and community facilities while living through the region's industrialization and urbanization.
On November 21, 1978, a hall was built for Samhwa Mission Station, strengthening the parish's local pastoral network. After Donghae became a city in 1980, the parish continued to reorganize and improve its facilities within the new urban structure, and further changes followed in the 1980s and 1990s. Cheongok-dong Parish was separated in 1992. Bukpyeong's history is therefore closely tied to mining and cement industries, the growth of Donghae, and repeated adjustments of parish territory, while the parish itself has remained a continuing Catholic center for the region.
Parish facilities were also developed over time. The Catholic Encyclopedia records the installation of a Marian statue in 1975, repairs to the church in 1984, the creation of an education center in 1988, and its expansion in 1990. These changes show that the parish continued to improve spaces for education and community life as well as liturgy in response to population movement and changes in parish size. Repeated parish divisions and facility expansion preserve the trace of a community adjusting its pastoral structure to the growth of Donghae.
