About this place

Bangok-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Namwonju district of the Diocese of Wonju, serving the Catholic community formed around Wonju Innovation City. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Saint Basil as its patron and describes a parish territory centered on the innovation-city area and parts of the residential zone east of National Route 5. Within a new urban district of homes and public institutions, the parish provides the local center where Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and sustain community life.

The key to understanding this parish is that it is not primarily the continuation of an old Catholic village or a traditional rural parish. It was organized in response to changes in Wonju's urban structure and the rapid growth of the innovation-city population. The diocese created a nearer pastoral center for the Catholics settling in this new district, and the parish continues to gather believers in the Bangok-dong area into one community. Its present local role and its identity under the patronage of Saint Basil are therefore more important for visitors than a long historical chronology. Its character as a modern urban parish is especially clear in the way it helps employees of relocated public institutions and newly arrived families settle into one local Catholic community.

History & origins

The origins of Bangok-dong Parish are directly connected with the development of Wonju Innovation City. As public institutions relocated and new residential complexes were built, the population of Bangok-dong increased rapidly, and the existing parish structure was no longer sufficient to serve Catholics in the new urban district. The Diocese of Wonju therefore moved to create an independent parish in the area. The Catholic Times reported that Gwanseol-dong and Bangok-dong parishes were established together as part of this response to urban change.

The diocese formally established Bangok-dong Parish on July 29, 2016. Both contemporary reporting and the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea identify Wonju Innovation City and surrounding areas as the territory of the new parish and record Saint Basil as its patron. The establishment of the parish was not simply the addition of another church building; it created an independent pastoral community within a newly formed urban living area.

Since then, Bangok-dong Catholic Church has served as the parish responsible for the liturgical and sacramental life of Catholics in the innovation-city district. Its history is relatively short, but that is itself characteristic of the place. Rather than emerging through centuries of growth in a traditional village community, the parish represents a modern reorganization of diocesan pastoral boundaries in response to urban development and population movement. Today's community continues from the parish foundation of 2016.

The simultaneous establishment of Bangok-dong and Gwanseol-dong brought the number of parishes in the Diocese of Wonju to fifty at the time. This was therefore more than a small local adjustment; it was a reorganization that incorporated the urban expansion of southern Wonju into the pastoral structure of the diocese as a whole. Bangok-dong’s history can thus be read as a case in which the creation of the innovation city and a modern adjustment of the diocesan pastoral network occurred together. The fact that its territory was defined from the beginning around the actual living area of the innovation city also shows that the parish arose from the pastoral needs of a new urban district rather than from a merely administrative division.
