About this place
Baeron Catholic Church is an independent parish in the Jecheon district of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Catholics in the Baeron area of Bongyang-eup, Jecheon. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Saint Joseph Jang Ju-gi as its patron. The name is familiar because Baeron Shrine, one of the important pilgrimage sites of Korean Catholic history, is located in the same area. This parish church, however, should not be confused with the shrine itself: it is the local parish responsible for the ordinary Mass, sacramental life, and community life of Catholics who live in the area.
The name Baeron is associated with a rich Catholic heritage, including the persecution-era Catholic village, the Hwang Sa-yeong White Paper, Saint Joseph Seminary, and the tomb of Father Thomas Choe Yang-eop. Baeron Parish exists today within that landscape of faith. For visitors, it is important to recognize that the historical meaning of the shrine and the current role of the parish are close to one another but distinct. The shrine preserves major memories of Korean Catholic history and martyr faith, while the parish sustains the liturgical and communal life of Catholics living there now. The coexistence of the parish and shrine within the same Catholic landscape of Baeron is distinctive: historical pilgrimage and ordinary parish life continue side by side in one area.
History & origins
Catholic history in the Baeron area reaches far back before the establishment of the present parish. Baeron was one of the Catholic villages where believers gathered after fleeing persecution in the late Joseon period. During the 1801 Sinyu Persecution, Hwang Sa-yeong is known to have written his famous White Paper in a cave at Baeron. In 1855, Saint Joseph Seminary, the first seminary in Korea, was established there, making the area an important center for the formation of clergy. The tomb of Father Thomas Choe Yang-eop, often remembered as the “martyr of sweat,” is also located at Baeron.
Baeron thus developed into a major place in Korean Catholic history where memories of a Catholic village, persecution, seminary formation, and the life of Father Choe Yang-eop overlap. These events, however, belong to the historical heritage of Baeron Shrine and the wider area, not to the institutional history of the present parish itself. Keeping those levels distinct is important so that the shrine and the parish are not treated as if they were the same institution.
The present Baeron Parish was established as an independent parish of the Diocese of Wonju on February 27, 2006, with Saint Joseph Jang Ju-gi as its patron. The direct institutional history of the parish therefore begins in 2006, while the place in which it stands carries Catholic memories reaching back to the nineteenth century. Baeron Catholic Church continues today as the local parish serving believers within that historically significant landscape.
The name “Baeron” is traditionally explained by the shape of the valley, which resembles the bottom of a boat. The name itself therefore carries the geography and memory of the old Catholic settlement, and this regional continuity explains why both the present parish and the shrine share the same place-name. The sources, however, do not directly prove an uninterrupted institutional line from the nineteenth-century Catholic community to the parish established in 2006, so the history of the region and the institutional history of the parish should remain distinct.
