About this place

Auraji Catholic Church is a parish in the Yeongpyeongjeong District of the Diocese of Wonju, serving Yeoryang-myeon and part of Jangyeol-ri in Bukpyeong-myeon, Jeongseon County. The Catholic Church in Korea directory lists Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron. In the mountainous terrain of Jeongseon, the parish serves Catholics scattered over a comparatively broad area and functions as a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and communal life.

The church complex includes the worship space, rectory, and catechetical rooms, and a Catholic Times report on its construction notes that facilities were also provided where a small group could stay for retreats. Auraji therefore has the character not only of a local parish church but also of a place intentionally designed for Catholics to remain for periods of prayer and faith sharing in a mountainous region. Situated within the Yeoryang area, the church gives visible form to the Catholic community of northern Jeongseon under the local name “Auraji.”

History & origins

The direct predecessor of Auraji Catholic Church was Yeoryang Mission Station, which had been served by Jeongseon Parish. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea, when the old Yeoryang mission building had to be removed because of urban planning, Jeongseon Parish adopted a long-term plan to create a separate parish for the area and proceeded with construction of a new church.

Construction began on October 5, 1997. Work was completed the following year, and Bishop James Kim Ji-seok of Wonju presided over the dedication on November 17, 1998. As Jeongseon Parish marked its fortieth anniversary, the community had gathered around the goal of “building a church and welcoming a priest.” The Auraji complex was built with a church, rectory, catechetical rooms, and space that could be used for retreats.

The new church did not immediately become an independent parish. The Catholic Church in Korea directory records January 25, 2000, as the establishment date of Auraji Parish. The community therefore developed in stages: the need to replace the Yeoryang mission building led first to construction of the new church, followed later by the establishment of an independent parish. This sequence shows how a mission community in northern Jeongseon grew into its own parish structure.
